Veganism in Politics: Chris Williamson, Cathy Jamieson and Kerry McCarthy with questions from Denis Kucinich and Maneka Gandhi « The Vegan Option: blog and internet radio

Vegan Politicians (MP3 download) (other formats) (via iTunes)

We profile the handful of people who combine veganism with politics at their country’s national level. I went to the UK Parliament to meet Britain’s three vegan MPs. What was their path to politics? And I took with me questions from their counterparts in the rest of the world.

Press the play button to find out. (Or, better still, subscribe via iTunes or your podcast catcher of choice.)

The British Vegan MPs

Chris Williamson (@ChriswMP on twitter) has an official site at www.chriswilliamson.org, but also find: Chris Williamson on Wikipedia; Chris Williamson at They Work for You ; Chris Williamson on BBC Democracy Live

Kerry McCarthy (@KerryMP)’s official site is www.kerrymccarthymp.org. Also: Kerry McCarthy on Wikipedia; Kerry McCarthy at They Work for You ; Kerry McCarthy on BBC Democracy Live

Cathy Jamieson (@cathyjamieson) is officially at CathyJamieson.com, but also: Cathy Jamieson on Wikipedia ; Cathy Jamieson at They Work for You ; Cathy Jamieson on BBC Democracy Live

The American Congressman

Dennis Kucinich (@repkucinich) has two official sites: kucinich.us and, for his constituency, kucinich.house.gov. He’s also Dennis Kucinich on Wikipedia.

The Indian MP

Maneka Gandhi chairs People for Animals. She is, obviously, also Maneka Gandhi at Wikipedia.

As Diana mentioned in the show, she advocates veganism and sometimes identifies as such, but admits she doesn’t always live up to it.

References for science

I referred to studies by the large long-term EPIC-Oxford study, in particular their 2009 paper on cancer incidence. The team have a particular interest in vegetarians and vegans, and I reported their results in my 2008 podcast short at Verdant Reports.

Vegan Cupcakes Take Over Parliament
Ms Cupcake

Can ‘a little of what you fancy’ help to tackle global health crises? MP Kerry McCarthy is inviting fellow MPs to chew on the plant-based solutions to obesity and hunger on World Vegan Day. MPs will also enjoy delicious vegan cupcakes from award-winning baker, Ms Cupcake on that day, Tuesday 1 November.

Kerry McCarthy MP said today, “I am delighted to be hosting this parliamentary event for World Vegan Day. I’ve been vegan for 20 years, and last year I was joined in parliament by two more vegan MPs; we’ve been told we’re the largest vegan caucus in the world! This event provides a great opportunity to raise with other MPs and parliamentary staff issues such as the impact of the livestock industry on global food security and the environment, and the benefits of a vegan diet. And maybe we’ll be able to persuade a few more to try turning vegan too.”

Vegan Society CEO, Jasmijn de Boo said today, “We are very pleased to be able to introduce delicious, locally made vegan cupcakes to MPs. As a ‘first’ for Parliament, there will also be tasty vegan dishes offered in each of the four Westminster restaurants every day during the week of World Vegan Day. Appealing, nutritious vegan food offers a powerful route to tackling current global crises. Plant-based diets and stock-free agriculture can help solve the deeply inter-connected problems of global climate change and global hunger, as well as obesity in the UK.”

Mellissa Morgan, Ms Cupcake, said today, “I'm excited to see more and more people embracing vegan food and lifestyles! Our first 'Ms. Cupcake' shop - London's first entirely vegan bakery - is going from strength to strength. The Baking Industry Awards recognised us as their 'Rising Star of the Year' and we've been chosen as a 2012 Olympic Games supplier. It's so encouraging that the British public are adopting compassionate behaviours which do less damage to the world. Ms. Cupcake is honoured to be a part of World Vegan Day at Parliament this year.”

Kerry McCarthy MP has requested an adjournment debate on World Vegan Day debate in the House of Commons on Tuesday 1 November. If successful, the debate will focus on the role of plant-based diets and stock-free agriculture in tackling hunger, obesity and global climate change.

World Vegan Day Poll

CommuniGate | World Vegan Day Poll:

In the Annual World Vegan Day Poll it seems that (according to those who expressed a preference) there's a pretty even split between those who think that more healthy and delicious vegan options on restaurant menus would make it easier for more people to adopt a vegan lifestyle (29%) and those who just want to take their friends on an outing to the nearest abatoir (30%)

Other options better vegan options in the shops (16%) and research that proves that a vegan lifestyle is the healthiest (12%)

Perhaps we should take to the streets and survey non vegans and find out what the public say.....?

We suspect how they think may be slightly different and produce different statistics

West Midlands Vegan Festival 2010

West Midlands Vegan Festival 2010: "- This year World Vegan Day will be celebrated a few days early in the UK , although no doubt there will be a few smaller parties going on on the Monday

The Saturday before World Vegan Day everyone is heading to the heart of England to Wolverhampton , just north of Birmingham in the West Midlands to the Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

The Midlands Vegan Campaign - MVC has been growing in size every year and this year it has moved to the Civic hall so that it can accommodate everyone as last year there was wasn't enough room to swing a cat treat filled shopping bag.

Usual mix of kids stuff, entertainment, talks, cookery demonstrations, food, fun, frollocks and ethical shopping.

Hopefully there'll be enough room this year to entice many new people in to discover how fun, healthy and delicious a vegan lifestyle can be.
